My name is Tim Crawley and I am now 38 years old. I was born and raised in St. Joseph, and have struggled almost my entire life with addiction and reckless behavior. At 36 I found my life in complete shambles and I was in desperate need of a turning point, and that is when I found Pivotal Point Transitional Housing. I credit everything I am today to God and His perfect timing, for bringing me to this place. Because of Pivotal Point, I have a new mind set, a changed attitude and renewed spirit. By accepting the outstretched hand extended to me by this program, I found my “Pivotal Point.” Second chances are for everyone, but you must also be willing to accept it and work every day towards a better life. I am living my successful life thanks to the tools that I was equipped with while at Pivotal Point. Every day I am thankful for my second chance.
Laura came to Pivotal Point shortly after her stay in prison. She heard about our program through her friend Stacy Kerns. Laura has battled the cycle of homelessness and drug addiction for quite some time as it was passed down by her mother. Her criminal actions took over her life and fogged her ability to be a capable mother and member of society. After losing a daughter to cancer and spending time in prison, Laura knew her life needed a change. She came to Pivotal Point with thousands of dollars in debt, no access to her children and a separation form her toxic ex-husband hanging over her head. She was unsure how to take care of all these struggles or where to even start. Getting a good job was hard because of her time in prison so she felt completely overwhelmed and unequipped.
Fast forward to today. Laura is part of the Pivotal Point graduate program. She has improved her job status, reunited with her daughter, stayed on track with the PPTH rules, stayed sober, and saved up money to eventually buy a car. Laura has started GED classes and has begun the process of getting divorced. She is working on getting legal custody of her daughter and would eventually like to see her sons as well. She has hope for her future. She has goals she is working towards, and she is focused on making them happen. Pivotal Point has been a safe place for Laura to come and turn her life around. She is a true success story, and the trajectory of her life has changed completely because of the hard work she is putting in while here at Pivotal Point.
Rachel came to Pivotal Point one year ago at the age of 17. Rachel had been on her own since the age of 15, living with friends couch surfing and living in her car. She speaks of her life before Pivotal Point as one where she was abused, afraid, and hopeless, knowing that there was more to life but just focusing on survival. When I met Rachel all you saw was her beautiful smile, but under that smile was anxiety, depression and fear. In her words, because of PPTH she is free from the things in her life that brought her down. Rachel now has hope and she feels safe. In May Rachel will graduate from high school with excellent grades. She has also earned multiple certificates from Hillyard vocational school and plans to attend college in the fall studying pre-med.
Rachel graduated from Pivotal Point last summer and continues to live with us in our graduate housing. We continue to support her as she has matured into a confident, intelligent young woman. It is inspiring to see what Rachel has achieved, knowing what she has been through.
Our mission is to expand our ability to reach out to the growing number of young adults that are homeless in our community. This story and many more are examples of how Mosaic and this community can make a difference one life or one family at a time.
